Micro Machines and Opto-Electronics on a Contact Lense
In his early 2008 lab tests, rabbits safely wore contact lenses with metal connectors for electronic circuits. The prototype lenses contained an electric circuit as well as red light-emitting diodes for a display. The lenses were tested on rabbits for up to 20 minutes and the animals showed no adverse effects.

Contact lenses as replacements for smart phone displays — even to monitor blood glucose levels — might best be done while not operating heavy equipment. “The true promise of this research is not just the actual system we end up making, whether it’s a display, a biosensor, or both,” comments Dr. Parviz. “We already see a future in which the humble contact lens becomes a real platform, like the iPhone is today, with lots of developers contributing their ideas and inventions. As far as we’re concerned, the possibilities extend as far as the eye can see, and beyond.”

I don’t know if this is scary or really cool! Part of me wants one to try out. The other part says- I don’t need to look at computer screens any more already.
As bad as my eyes are getting from looking at a computer screen all day- every day it’s ironic that someone’s “solution” involves contact lenses!

amazing breakthrough! just yesterday as i was watching the cable, can’t recall what channel, probably discovery channel, they have shown how cyborg age is coming. There are robots of different kinds already, and it reminds me of some of my favorite movies Back To The Future, Star Wars and Terminator.
But then, these technological advancements really gives me the creeps! Because I believe that the more knowledgeable people get, the closer we are to doomsday!
anyways, great post still. glad to come across your site.

Not sure I want electronic circuits so close to my retinas. It does sound cool, though 🙂

Would you like Google with that? If you add internet and Google with bionic vision, then you could see search results super imposed on your ordinary vision – some thing like ‘augmented reality’ Combine that with mind reading technology – machine translates thoughts into speech, and home automation commands, you could think of a command and make things happen like a magician! (albeit only electronically controlled, of course)..

I think the advances being made are tremendous. Soon the invasive nature of these procedures might be drastically reduced or even eliminated.
