Many cool products result from scientific and engineering research and development. One class of such products are the global positioning system devices. One example of those devices is the Garmin Nuvi 350 Pocket or Vehicle GPS Navigator Viewer (buy from Amazon) – in photo.
Europe, is exploring putting their own GPS satellite system in orbit to remove their current dependence of the system using United States military satellites. Sat-nav looks to smart ideas:
Some applications are obvious: consumer mobiles which not only allow you to phone ahead and book that pizza restaurant but also show you on-screen how to get there and tell you where the nearest cashpoint is located.
Other applications will stretch the imagination and ingenuity of Europe’s smartest technologists.

We are seeing a convergence of technology within Sat Navs themselves, as the market leaders attempt to see off the threats from Mobile Phones, Pocket PC’s and built in applications.
With their new Go Range TomTom have included Voice recognition, text to speech, Bluettoh hands-free for cell-phones, and thousands of POI’s.
You can speak to your TomTom, tell it where you want to go, select a restaurant, and the device will phone it’s number for you so you can make a reservation.
Need to call the emergency or break-down services? A couple of screen-presses and the PND will phone the appropriate people and tell you exactly what to tell them in terms of your location – “I’m on theM4 between J8 and J9 travelling towards London.”
Very safe and smart.
Now we just need them to be able to drive the car too…
