UW- Madison Wins 4th Concrete Canoe Competition

This was no ordinary boat race. The competitors weren’t sleek sailboats riding the winds or high-powered yachts muscling their way across the finish line. These were canoes. Made of concrete. Hundreds of pounds of concrete. And the only thing propelling these water-worthy crafts was the determination of the engineering students that created them in a bid to win the ‘America’s Cup of Civil Engineering.’

This race is so much fun to be a part of! My dad teaches Civil Engineering and the concrete canoe race is his student’s favorite (and most frustrating) project. It may seem like a great canoe…until it hits the water. Great job UW-Madison!

This race is amazing! It’s a great way to combine fun with education! This activity demonstrates teamwork, overcoming adversity, and other useful engineering and just plain overall life skills. Great job.

Who knew you could build a canoe out of concrete ?! I live in Marin, the home of the actual America’s Cup, and I have to say this looks more exciting. Is this event still happening? (I just realized as I’m commenting, that this is from 6 years ago : )
